Inmitten der Nachwirkungen der Corona Lockdowns und im Zuge des anhaltenden Krieges in der Ukraine schieĂen in ganz Europa die Energiepreise in die Höhe. Verschiedene Proteste und Kampagnen wurden daraufhin ins Leben gerufen. Die Platypus Affiliated Society lĂ€dt ein, um ĂŒber die Bedeutung der aktuellen Krise und die Reaktion der Linken darauf zu diskutieren.
Wie versteht Ihr die gegenwĂ€rtige Krise, ihre UrsprĂŒnge und Bedingungen? Wie versteht Ihr das VerhĂ€ltnis der gegenwĂ€rtigen Krise zum Kapitalismus?
Welche Rolle hat die Linke, wenn ĂŒberhaupt, bei der Schaffung dieser Bedingungen gespielt und wie sollte sie auf die aktuelle Situation reagieren? Welchen Hindernissen steht sie gegenĂŒber?
Gibt es historische PrÀzedenzfÀlle, aus denen die Linke lernen kann?

Ist Marxismus heute noch relevant? Angesichts der Lage der Welt scheint es gerechtfertigt zu sein, die Vergangenheit nach Ideen fĂŒr die Gegenwart zu durchsuchen. Dass das eine gefĂ€hrliche Aufgabe ist, wird gerade am Marxismus klar. Seine Geschichte ist unweigerlich mit den Katastrophen des 20. Jahrhunderts verbunden. Wir wissen nicht ob es ohne ihn je die beiden Weltkriege, den Faschismus oder eben die sich auf ihn berufenden Regime in Moskau und Peking gegeben hĂ€tte.
Gleichzeitig strahlt er eine bestechende AutoritÀt aus, wenn es darum geht gerade diese Katastrophen zu verstehen.
Der Blick in die Vergangenheit ist entstellt. Um ihn trotzdem zu wagen, wird euch an diesem Abend Stefan Maleschitz durch die Geschichte begleiten.
Stefan geht der Frage nach was Begriffe wie Marxismus oder die Linke einmal historisch bedeutet haben und welches Potential fĂŒr eine Politik, die sich der Freiheit verpflichtet fĂŒhlt, darin liegen könnte. Angesichts der Katastrophen des 20. Jahrhunderts sind diese Fragen schwer zu beantworten â es bleibt unklar, ob eine AnknĂŒpfung am Marxismus mehr ist als blanker Utopismus.
Platypus Wien lĂ€dt wieder ein - diesmal am Freitag, den 05.08. ab 20:30 Uhr im CafĂ© Anno in der Lerchenfelder StraĂe 132, 1080 Wien.
Der Barabend lĂ€sst in entspannter AtmosphĂ€re Raum fĂŒr informelle Diskussionen ĂŒber Ideen, aktuelle Themen und die Geschichte der Linken oder Artikel aus der Platypus Review.
Eine gute Gelegenheit, MitstreiterInnen zu treffen und das Projekt Platypus kennenzulernen und zu diskutieren.

Teach-In: What is Society?
After the fall of the Berlin Wall, both Thatcher and Laclau could agree on one thing: âsocietyâ does not exist. Since 2015, a meme circulates stating vapidly: âWe live in a society.â What was society? What is its crisis? Two 19th century phenomena, âsocialismâ and âsociologyâ, continue to haunt us. Can we make sense of them without a concept of âsocietyâ?

Teach-In: Prefigurative Politics and the Millennial Left
Before folding into centre-Left political parties, the Millennial Left went through a âneo-anarchistâ or âprefigurativeâ phase. The âmovement of the squaresâ (encompassing Occupy and the Indignados) is the most visible manifestation of this prefigurative turn in politics. With prefiguration on the rise again today, this teach-in seeks to clarify and critique this tendency as a historical phenomenon of the Left.

Panel Discussion: SolidarnoĆÄ in the 1980s and the politics of solidarity
SolidarnoĆÄ (Solidarity) emerged in Poland in 1980 as a movement for workers solidarity with self-governing shipyard unions. With the support of dissident Polish intellectuals at home and broad sections of the Left abroad, SolidarnoĆÄ grew in strength and became a key participant in Polish reforms through the 80s and beyond. As such, it can appear as either a late expression of New Left attempts to further the revolution, or as a prefiguration of the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

In the recent past SYRIZA exemplified a moment of hope for a large part of the (European) Left. In sharp contrast, today it is considered an example of capitulation to the establishment and a scapegoat for the spoiled chances of the anti-austerity struggles. The stakes of SYRIZA politics were enigmatically expressed in the phrase: âSYRIZA was in government but not in powerâ. This interview wants to explore the legacy of SYRIZA and the sense in which SYRIZA did or did not express potential for radical political change. Nikos Manousakis, member of the Platypus Affiliated Society, will interview Olga Stefou, member of the SYRIZA Central Committee.
