On January 7, 2023, prompted by recent protests in China, the Platypus Affiliated Society held a panel on China and the Left. The panelists included Conrad Hamilton (PhD at Université Paris 8), Griffith Jones (formerly of the Socialist Workers Party (U.S.)), David McMullen (simplymarxism.com, a self-described “unreconstructed Maoist,” formerly of Red Eureka Movement), and Anthony Monteiro (Saturday Free School, Philadelphia).
On November 14, 2021, the Platypus Affiliated Society hosted a panel discussion, “The ALP and the Left,” at the New International Bookshop in Melbourne, Australia. An edited transcript follow.
IF WE WANT TO DISCUSS CHINA, the first thing we need to note is that the present regime is a reactionary police state. It is not a “deformed workers’ state” that preserves some of the achievements of the revolution. It is the product of a counter-revolution that occurred in October 1976, a month after Mao’s death.
