TEACH IN: The British Empire, the Crown, and Imperialism

Date/Time: Monday, September 26th, 2022 at 6:00PM
Location: 726 Broadway, 6th Floor (Liberal Studies Lounge, down the left-hand hall to the left.)

Description:

The passing of Queen Elizabeth II has caused discourse on colonialism, and the British Monarchy's role in it, to resurface.

This teach-in will track the differences between colonialism as it originally emerged in Western Europe (e.g. the extractive colonies of Spain and Portugal), the Bourgeois colonies (e.g. the British colonies in North America), and Imperialism (e.g. the Second Empire of Louis Napoleon III). Through this we hope to make the changing role of the Monarchy palpable and answer the following questions:

What exactly is Imperialism?
What is the difference between Colonialism and Imperialism?
How has the Left historically understood Imperialism?
What roles has the British Monarchy played in Colonialism?
